Quo vadis China?

The 19th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party next week is expected to strengthen the power of Xi Jingping and his regime of hard authoritarianism.

Although the Chinese leadership is endeavouring to bring about structural change towards a post-industrial service society, the success of these efforts could be jeopardised precisely because of hard authoritarianism. For China's path of "economic growth without political and social freedom" is increasingly reaching its limits.
