Russia and Ukraine. Will new economic sanctions help?

by Norbert F. Tofall

Despite the economic costs, which the previous sanctions have generated, especially in Russia, there is nothing to suggest that further sanctions will persuade Russia to change its policy.

Whether the conflict between Russia and Ukraine will turn into an open conventional war in the classical style cannot be ruled out, but it is less likely in view of the economic problems of each country and a Demographic War Index of 0.67 in the case of Russia and 0.76 for Ukraine. In view of their own economic and demographic conditions, both sides would lose more than they gain.
