Although the chancellor candidate and designated SPD chairman Martin Schulz has achieved survey successes in recent weeks, which may change quickly, the current surveys show that the red-red-green coalition does not yet have a majority at the federal level.
Whether the outcome of the state elections in the Saarland on 26 March 2017, in Schleswig-Holstein on 7 May 2017 and in North Rhine-Westphalia on 14 May 2017 could lead to a trend opening up government opportunities for the red-red-green coalition, or whether a movement to prevent red-red-green coalition would emerge from these state elections, remains to be seen.
