The governing grand coalition under Chancellor Angela Merkel started in 2013 with 67.2 percent of the votes cast. According to a recent poll, it has lost 10 to 15 percentage points of approval to date.

Current polls show that the only realistic alternative to the ruling black-red coalition is a coalition of CDU/CSU, Greens and FDP. The decisive question, however, is under which conditions this mathematical alternative can lead to policy changes in Germany.
