Integrists and Identitaries

by Thomas Mayer, Norbert F. Tofall

Populism is the new trend in politics. But what is "populism" and what is behind it? Integrist and identitarian movements want to transform a differentiated society into an identity-forming community by setting specific goals for the state. Ultimately, this is tantamount to an attack on justice and freedom and on an open society.

Since the economy is a part of society, social developments always have an impact on the economy. The increasing number of integrist and identitary movements since the unadjusted financial crisis of 2007/2008 therefore not only influence political decision-making in democratic processes, but also endanger the prosperity of nations and the growth of world trade. Anti-globalisation and anti-capitalism from the left and right are celebrating their happy beginnings as central programmes of integrist and identitary movements. The differentiated society is to be integrated by state specification of specific goals and transformed into an identity-forming community.
