Inequality and economic growth?

It is said that countries with higher income inequality have lower economic growth. Inequality acts as an obstacle to growth because private consumption is weakened.

But is consumption the only driver of growth? Don't investments play a role? The focus on individual growth drivers shows that the issue of inequality can be used in many ways as a vehicle for asserting group interests.
