Germany has elected a new Bundestag

by Norbert F. Tofall

The biggest loser in yesterday's Bundestag election is Chancellor Angela Merkel. Although she would have to resign, she wants to remain Chancellor.

Since the SPD has already announced its intention to join the opposition, at the moment there is only one Jamaica coalition of CDU/CSU, FDP and Greens left to form the government, which could involve difficult and lengthy negotiations. For the European political demands of French President Emmanuel Macron, a Jamaica coalition in Germany would create the danger that the FDP could take veto positions against further centralisation and fiscal communitarisation in the EU and the euro zone.
