Excess mortality - a better measure?

The excess mortality (numbers of deaths compared to previous years) provides information on the development and extent of the Covid-19 pandemic. The advantage of the approach is its independence from the authorities' survey procedures but comes with the disadvantage of a delay and assumptions about the underlying benchmark.
