An EU referendum in France?

Since the Front National is unlikely to win a majority in the National Assembly after the June 2017 parliamentary elections, even if Marine Le Pen wins, cohabitation is likely.

It is not so easy in France to initiate a referendum to withdraw from the European Union. According to Article 88-1 of the French Constitution, France participates in the European Union and, according to Article 88-2, agrees to "the transfer of the competences necessary for the creation of European Economic and Monetary Union". In order to leave the EU, France must therefore amend its constitution beforehand.
