A historic day in the USA

The storming of the Capitol on 6 January 2020 will probably go down in history. This is reason enough to make a timely assessment, which, however, can only be preliminary. The storm made visible the deep division in US society. It is so deep that even democratic institutions (parliament) and procedures (electoral processes) that have been rooted in it for 240 years are being questioned and rejected by a frightening number of citizens. How could it come to this?
